Reasons To Shave Your Head

One of the crummy things about chemo is losing your hair. Especially for women. For some reason, women tend to identify themselves with their hair. Like it's part of who they are. True it does impact impressions people may have of you, but it's NOT who you are! When I discovered I would lose my hair, I organized a BBQ/bonfire in the backyard, invited my friends & made it a fun event. My Mom2 came & shaved her head in support which was incredible! 

At the end of it all, it wasn't such a big deal. I didn't want the trauma of having my hair come out in clumps, so I shaved it all off after the first treatment. I'm nearly two years since I started growing back my hair. It's a challenge to let it grow. It's tempting to shave it all off & just get on with life. I've never been a hairstyling kind of gal, so maybe that's part of it!

If you're facing chemo or know someone who is, I'll recommend the following: shave it off. And when you're done chemo, keep shaving your head for another month or so. Otherwise you'll get that downy, fuzzy, frizzy stuff. Let your hair strengthen & work a little of the chemo residues out of your system. Have fun with hats or wigs - www.wowwigs.com was a great site for me. I ordered plenty of wigs to keep people guessing who I was! I always wondered what I'd look like blonde, red, curly haired, etc, etc. I think I had 16 wigs in total! They were reasonably priced at $20-40. Find someone to help you with makeup if you feel naked - I did! I used brown eyeshadow to draw on my eyebrows & I think it worked better than pencil. Use eyeliner - check out the YouTube tutorials on putting on makeup. Have fun with it. Make the most of your situation. If you're still having doubts, read my reasons listed below. Lastly, I've noticed that I want to wear make up & big earrings, or I look like I'm batting for the other team. Don't worry, I've had my share of fun starting rumours! ;o) Additionally, some of the outfits I used to wear, just look, well, ridiculous! In any case, there are plenty of positives to sporting a buzz cut.

16. A nice hot shower on the back of your freshly shaved head feels AMAZING
17. You save $$$ on shampoo & conditioner
18. No more stinky hairsprays or gels
19. No need for a blowdryer - wash 'n go!
20. No need for a curling iron
21. No need for a flat iron
22. You save $$$ on electricity from not using the above! (Hello Carbon Footprint!)
23. A little moisturizer goes a long way - the only styling product you'll ever need

28. You have a fabulous friend who just so happens to be an incredibly talented Henna           Artist who graciously offered to transform your bald head into a piece of art!
29. You can sleep in for that extra 15 minutes because you don't need to 'do' your hair.
30. You can simply take off your toque & it's a much better temperature regulator than removing a jacket or sweater!
31. When you are in a grocery store 600 kms from home, your friend's friend (that you've never met) remembers you when she sees your photo later that evening!
32. Did I mention your water bill will be lower because you'll use less water when you shower?
33. Those annoying kiosks in the malls with the hair straighteners NEVER harass you!
34. Nor do the kiosks with the bejewelled hair clips & pins!
35. It is the PERFECT hairstyle for the Caribbean.
36. The salt water doesn't mat your hair.
37. Your snorkel gear doesn't snag or pull your hair.
38. You're always ready on time!
39. You are ready before your husband. Now that is impressive! 
40. You can rock a mohawk for as long as you like. And go for it!
