Day 533 - I Love My Birthday On Facebook!

This morning I actually did yoga! It was great! I laid the mat out on the tile floor in the sunshine & away I went. It was great to soak up the vitamin D & focus on some flexibility & breathing.

The weather is glorious & I am determined to enjoy it to the fullest. I sat outside & read through the copy of Cesar’s Way Jaco bought in the Barbados Airport.

The rest of the afternoon I tidied up the room & put things away. In the evening, I attacked the MagicJack. It never worked from the time I sent it over with Jaco to give to his Mom so she could call us in Canada. We tried to figure it out over Skype when I was in Canada & he was here, but we had no luck. So tonight, I tackled the MagicJack.

It took a good 2+ hours, but I finally have it working. Of course, if it wasn’t for the live chat support, I would have never figured it out! The computer settings were registering an older version of Windows than what it actually had, so the MagicJack didn’t think it was compatible. That & a few other ‘minor’ things had to be fixed. Happy to say, it’s now working!

I was just headed to bed, Jaco was already asleep, and I thought I would check my emails before I joined him. When I opened up my laptop, there was Sylvia! On Skype! Yay! She phoned me & we were able to do a video chat. I was able to see brand new baby Colton! Of course, big brother Drayton was there too! It was great! What a perfect end to the day!

Oh yes, the title of the post! I was delighted to see over 90 birthday wishes on Facebook & a few emails today! Wow! I felt so special! Some of the people are ‘acquaintances’ on Facebook, but nonetheless, it was meaningful that they took a few moments out of their day to wish me a happy birthday! Thanks! I spent a while responding to the greetings… It really made my day!

Day 532 - Third Birthday In Africa

Today was my birthday. The third one to be spent in Africa. Crazy! Last year I was mauled by lion cubs. This year I was getting over jet lag. Suddenly getting mauled by lions sounds pretty good! Ha ha.

We slept late. Really late. I think I only woke up after 1 or 2 in the afternoon. I was getting ready for what was left of the day when Petro came & asked if I wanted to come & say goodbye to Gustav, Crystal & Zandrie, as they were leaving for home. So much for the visit! I guess we'll have to make another visit soon!

After they were gone, Jaco & I went to the grocery store to pick up some food. We checked out the new Checkers. The Hermanus Train Station is now a 'shopping mall'. There are about 6 shops & a grocery store. Technically Hermanus has never had a train come through town, but I guess they wanted a train station because... Well, who knows? In any case, it was nice to observe what was new & different in town. We also drove to the beach as the sun set & watched the waves for a while. I love the smell of the ocean & the sound of the waves. It's rejuvenating!

Once we were back at the house, Petro made dinner for us & I warmed up the Malva Pudding. Petro is a great chef & talented baker, so I'm sure my store bought Malva Pudding didn't win any awards, but in any case, I put it in the oven to warm it up.

Now, ovens are in Celsius over here. I've only baked in Fahrenheit, the few times I have actually baked. I couldn't tell what was bake, broil or otherwise, as the symbols looked nothing like the ones we have at home. I put it on a random symbol & waited patiently. Petro had slipped out for something, so I couldn't ask her & Jaco certainly didn't know. A few minutes later, I open the door to check the pudding & there is a cloud of smoke coming out & filling the kitchen, choking the oxygen out of the room. And me.

I open the outside door to let some fresh air in & smoke out. That's when Petro arrived. I'm sure she thought me a complete nincompoop. In any case, she flipped a few switches on the oven & no more smoke, just nice heat & warm Malva Pudding. We all enjoyed a nice dish with cherry ice cream. Happy Birthday to me.

I'm happy to have made it to 32 years of age. After this past year or three years, I'm happy to reach another year of life... happy & healthy.

Day 525 - Antigua

Yawn. I'm beat. I was up until 0230 working on Becky's birthday card. It's her birthday today. She phoned me at 0930 this morning to see what I was doing. (Sleeping) She called again at 1130. Still sleeping! I got up after the 2nd wake up call & made arrangements to meet her out at a bar with Nelis & Tim for a drink & then for lunch. I quickly rushed out to get the birthday card printed before I joined them.

I had previously spoken to Becky about a day at the beach, but when I joined them, no one was in beach gear. Antigua has the best beaches & this was my last one. I was a bit bummed that we wouldn't be going in the water today. In any case, I tagged along for lunch. I didn't eat anything, as I thought I might bow out & sneak away to the beach. In the end I didn't, but I enjoyed some political/religious talk with the boys & Becky!

I went back to the ship & headed out on deck for a bit of sunshine. While I was lying on my belly, I felt a little tickle on my back & then noticed some black soot all over the postcards I was writing. Where on Earth did that come from? I looked over & there was a large man, also on his belly & he had a massive chunk of soot on his back. Yuck. That was the end of the sunning session!

On my way down to the Medical Centre, I ran into Carla & Alessia. They were having ice cream sundaes. It was British Sailaway, so we watched the Brits wave their flags & sing patriotic songs as we left our berth in Antigua.

In the evening, we went for supper for Becky's birthday. She's quite the birthday girl. I've never met anyone who specifies their birthday cake request - actually fills it out! Orders chocolate covered strawberries, goes for drinks, lunch & dinner... I suppose we could all take a few lessons on how to have a birthday! We had a wonderful team dinner at the pizzeria. It would be the last meal at the pizzeria, so we enjoyed visiting with Rafeeq, Maja & Danka one last time! Of course, Rafeeq gave Jaco his usual plate of nuts to keep him happy!

What a day! Tomorrow will be a little more packing... I'm getting there!

Day 463 - CSI:Miami (Crazy Stay In:Miami)

Today will most certainly go down in the history books as one of the most intriguing days of my life. Today was ‘Turnaround’ day at the Institute. Guests are leaving & some will be arriving today & tomorrow. Some were up early to catch a flight & some were hanging around until the afternoon.

The sun was finally out! It was warm! I sat outside & called Mom. She told me all about the snow & cold weather on it’s way. I don’t miss that!

My roommate had graciously invited me to come & stay at her place tonight & spend some time in Miami. Alessandra was busy, so it worked out well! I looked up bus/train schedules & it will be an easy way for me to get back tomorrow afternoon.

When I was a little girl, I always dreamed big. I have no idea where it came from. I grew up in the country, on a ranch, surrounded by all things rural. In any case, I never dreamed this big. My head is still spinning. Here’s a snippet of 29th January, 2011:

We drove to Miami in a convertible Bentley. To a small island.

I could see the cruise ships docked waiting to set sail for another week of adventure & sunshine. They each blew the ship’s whistle as they sailed out of the harbor. (Just a few more weeks until I see Jaco!)

I am certain I have walked into a magazine - something from Island Living, or Beach Homes. There is a water fountain as we walk up the steps. Tall & white, plenty of windows, infinity pool, elaborate artwork & décor, a gym, a 4th floor balcony where I watched the sunset, speakers in all the rooms, a jet-ski dock, worldly carvings & statues – I knew that people lived like this, but I’ve never experienced it! My roommate showed me some books from her & her husband’s travels – one book covered about 10 years worth of travel for you & me. They did it one summer! I commented on the books & how nice they were. She said, ‘Oh, yes, it’s a little company my husband started. It’s called Shutterfly.’ (For all you photo/scrapbookers out there – yeah. ‘Nuff said.)

I watched the sunset over Miami & then typed this post. We’re off to a 30th birthday party this evening – should be interesting! I’ll take my camera, but no promises! I’m feeling slightly ‘under-dressed’ I have Lulu capris, a grey tank top & flipflops! Oh & no hair & no wig! I’ll only stand out a little bit.

Day 453 - Happy Birthday Brother!

Nothing too exciting today. I managed to finally track down my brother & talk to him about the happenings at Dad’s & Granny’s stuff. Of course, I wanted to wish him Happy Birthday. Today he is 28. Apparently he has a new girlfriend, whom I’m anxious to meet. I hope he has found someone equally as wonderful as he is. I think the world of my brother & although I don’t get to see him very often, I always value the times we do get to spend together. He’s a cowboy to the core & with that, comes a gentlemanly quality not found in a lot of other men. Yes, he still has a few ‘ruffled feathers’, but show me a man who doesn’t. We were cut off part way through our chat, but it sounds like the girlfriend is on her way over for a birthday dinner.

I also called Drayton to wish him Happy Birthday. No one answered, so I sang a little song to the answering machine. He has no idea how lucky he is. No one ever gets a song from me! (Maybe the lucky ones are the ones who don’t!)

More packing & trying to get sorted & ready for all things futuristic…

Day 442 - Happy Birthday Kim!

This morning we got a rip-roaring start on the day. We woke up at 1000. We went downstairs to have breakfast & Fernando made us a lovely meal – fresh pineapple, guava, banana, and papaya. However, in Cuba, papaya is not called papaya. It is ‘fruta la bomba’ (I think!). Papaya is a term for female anatomy & it rhymes with the capital of Saskatchewan. Enough said! Fernando made us fresh juice, scrambled eggs on toast, and also ham & cheese. (For Kim) By the time we finished breakfast & got ourselves ready, it was noon. Oh well, what are holidays for, right?

We were going to take the local bus & waited at the stop for a few minutes. There didn’t appear to be a bus coming any time soon, so we started walking into town. We walked along the Malécon – on the dry side – for quite a ways. The buildings were impressive. Tall apartments, hotels, fancy waterparks – but sadly, most of them were in need of repair, paint & some TLC. As we rounded a curve, we realized that we were still a fair distance from downtown. We hailed a ‘huevito’, a little yellow eggshell of a cab/scooter & he took us to the Capitolio. Bearing a strong resemblance to a certain building in Washington, DC, we discovered that Capitolio was closed. We tried, in broken Spanish/Spanglish, to ask the guard when it would be open. Tomorrow? Reparacion. Hmm. It’s under repairs. Okay… Eventually we find out it will be open in 2020! Come back in 9 years! There was a little old lady next to the guard selling peanuts & she had joined in our conversation. I told them I would be her age when it reopened & would most likely need a cane by then! We had a good laugh & carried on.

Kim knew of a cigar factory behind Capitolio and she wanted to take a tour, as she had missed it 2 years ago when she was here. Guess what?! It was closed too! We’re on a real streak! We went into the cigar shop & looked around. All I wanted was a box & the nice man working there managed to find one for me! For free! I then bought my brother a Cohiba for his birthday. (Although, as I type this 3 weeks later, I hear he’s quit smoking!)

We left the cigar shop & headed towards China Town. Kim wanted to check it out & I was seeing everything for the first time, so away we went. We stopped en route to photograph a train graveyard. They had all these old engines & track & cars in the middle of downtown. I have no idea why.

Carrying on towards China Town, we were photographing along our way & I came to the corner of the block. While waiting to cross, this man starts talking to me. He’s with his girlfriend & they ask me where I’m from, wish me Happy New Year, is it my first time to Havana, etc, etc. Me, being the friendly person that I am, tell them all the answers they want to hear. They proceed to tell me there is a Salsa Festival in town this weekend & there is a free show at a nearby restaurant starting soon & did we want to see it. As they are telling me this, Kim walks up, having missed the earlier part of the conversation & I ask her, she says, ‘Yes.’ Away we go. They take us to this little café filled with locals. There are no salsa dancers & no place for salsa dancers to dance. We sit down at a table & the guy eagerly writes down all the ‘must see’ spots in Havana. Oh so helpful. He orders some variation of a Mojito – Compais Segundo – or something like that. I realize when the bring the drink(s) that I need a non-alcoholic one. They return with a non-alcoholic one shortly after. We chitchat & visit about life in Cuba. The woman shows us her Ration Card – the monthly allowance of food. 2.7 kg of rice, so much of beans, chicken, etc, etc. She then proceeds to tell us a sob story of how they can’t get milk easily for their baby. Meanwhile, the guy is trying to get us to buy cigars on the sly from some non-store place. I had just spent money on cigars, so I wasn’t interested. I thought I could be nice & buy them some milk, so the lady took me to a little booth outside the restaurant. The booth sold various goods & she asked the guy for milk. He puts a plastic grocery bag on the counter & there are maybe 4 bags of powdered milk in it. He punches the total into the calculator & shows me ‘24’. I am thinking it’s 24 moneda nacional (local currency), as 24 of them make 1 CUC (the tourists currency), which is about $1.10 CDN. I dig out 1CUC from my wallet & put it on the counter. The guy shakes his finger at me. I am thinking they don’t accept CUC. Then the lady tells me it’s 24CUC. I laugh at her. Is she crazy? $24 for 4 bags of powdered milk! I tell her I’m not that wealthy & I’m very sorry, but I can’t give that much money for milk. She looks miffed & we head back to the restaurant.

Somewhere in this drama, the guy spilled his drink on himself & orders another one.

When we return, all hell broke loose. We asked for the bill so we could go & do some more sight seeing. When the lady brought us the bill, it was a handwritten note scribbled on a blank piece of scrap paper. No business name, nothing. They wanted $30 for 5 mojitos. The maximum you should pay is around $2. We were clearly being ripped off. I could tell the couple expected us to pay & neither Kim or I wanted to cough up that much for drinks – that we didn’t even want or order!  We both agreed something wasn’t right, so I got up & went over to a table of tourists that had come in & asked them how much they were paying for their drinks. Boy! Did that start a commotion!

I had barely spoken the words, ‘Excuse me, sorry to interrupt, but…’ when I suddenly had about 3 staff around me. They were right in my face saying things like, ‘Lady! What you doing at this table?’ ‘Do you know these people?’ ‘Are these your family?’ ‘That is your table. You need to sit down at your table.’ Then the Manager shows up & starts barking at me. I got a little nervous when she asked for my passport! The people seated at the table didn’t know what they were paying for their drinks, so my efforts were futile. I reluctantly went & sat down.

I told them this was ridiculous & we weren’t going to pay $30 for 5 drinks. The waitress got up in my face & started ranting away at me. I told her I didn’t think my drink should be the same price as the others, as it didn’t even have alcohol in it. She looks at the empty cigar box I’d been given & says, ‘Oh, you don’t drink, but you smoke?’ I saw red instantly. How dare you judge me!?

Thankfully, Kim was the calm, quiet & thoughtful one in all of this. She took the words of the Manager & fed them back to her. ‘You drink, you pay’ the Manager had said. So, Kim says, ‘Okay, we drank 2 drinks, so we will pay for two drinks.’ We ended up giving them $15CUC for 2 drinks. What a rip off. Luckily the Japanese lady from the other table came by to check on us & stayed with us until we all left the café. We walked with them for a few blocks to make sure we weren’t being followed & then said ‘Thank you’ for the 30th time & went our separate ways. What a day.

Kim & I strolled down Prado, admiring the artwork of many talented Cubans. There was an amazing photographer & one artist in particular who caught my eye. We walked past several museums, through a monastery & eventually down one of the main pedestrian/touristy streets. We wandered past Floridita, the home of the first daiquiri, we walked past an antique market & Plaza de la Catedral. Finally, we ended up at an Italian restaurant for dinner. We had another mediocre meal & enjoyed the live band that played during our meal. I was rather amused by the fact that they played Andrea Bocelli during their intermission on a DVD projector. (The standing joke in Cuba is – the three biggest failures of the Revolucíon are breakfast, lunch & dinner. Not too far from the truth!)

There was a cute little kitty trotting between tables meowing for food. I took to flinging shrimp nonchalantly off my knife & launching it onto the ground for the calico cat. I think he was most grateful.

We stopped at the Hotel Parque Centrale on our way back for dessert. We were one of only three tables in the upscale restaurant. Our waiter started visiting with us & lo & behold, he & Kim shared the exact same birthday! She even demanded ID & sure enough! 08January! What a coincidence! That was pretty neat! He was off to the clubs in a few short hours – in Vedado, funnily enough!

Kim & I made our way home & crashed. It had been a long day, with much excitement! Tomorrow we are going to walk to the bus station to get our tickets for Varadero. We’ll stop by the cemetery to check out the elaborate tombs.

I love Havana.

xxxxMaria & Kim

I'll post photos one day... In the meantime, check out Kim's work from Cuba. She's organized & edited! I'm not!
