Day 493 - Grand Cayman

Today was the fourth time I've visited the stingrays. I remembered why I didn't want to go when I got out there. Stingrays freak me out.

I wanted to go to take photos of M&D2. They had never experienced anything like this & I wanted to be sure they had some 'evidence' of their day with the stingrays. The ride out in the boat was brilliant! A sunny day with incredible shades of green & blue in the water. We slowly made our way out to the stingrays & climbed into the water.

That's when I remembered why I didn't want to come. The stingrays are slimy & they can't see very well. They think every thing is food. Including you! And they suck! Way stronger than your average Dyson! I've had my fingers caught once in the grinding plates of a stingray. It wasn't fun!

So there I was, dancing about in the water, trying to have eyes in the back of my head, making sure I didn't get sucked, stung or mounted by some overeager stingray! I would freeze like a steel rod every time one would come floating past, but naturally the water was rough & the waves would smash me around like a dishrag. I tried to snorkel, but as soon as I stuck my head in the water, I panicked at the thought of a stingray coming up from the rear & catching me. I handed the camera to Mom2 & told her to snap away. I was done!

I huddled in the main crowd, trying to stay out of everyone's way, stingrays included. The more I watched, the more I relaxed. There was one particularly affectionate stingray called 'Notch', who, coincidentally had a notch out of her front. She loved the guide, a South African lass. Then there was Frisbee. She didn't have a tail. Kind of a cruel name, but cute, nonetheless. I braved up & held Frisbee. After all, I couldn't come all this way & not have an interaction with the stingrays, now could I?

I took photos of M&D2 holding stingrays. They loved it. Mom2 was in tears at several times throughout the day!

She's still learning her 'cruise etiquette'. When we arrived at Stingray City, she spotted Cesar, our friend from the shops on another boat. Cesar had been with us on the tours in Grenada & Aruba. So she waves frantically whilst yelling, 'CESAR! HOW ARE YOU?!?!' Everyone stops moving, it becomes quiet & everyone looks at her. Cesar sheepishly waves back. I just shake my head. Oh well. Bless.

After our stingray snorkel, we headed closer to the reef & hopped back in the water for a snorkel. It was beautiful! Great visibility & stunning fish - it was fantastic! I loved every minute of it! I didn't want to get out of the water! I don't think I was the only one either!

On our way back, I quizzed the South African guide about working in the Caymans. She has a 7 year visa. Hmmmmm... Jaco? I could work in a jewelry shop & Jaco could save lives! Sounds like a bang-up idea to me! How could you NOT want to be here! Okay, fine, hurricane season maybe. Otherwise, I'm in!

What a perfect day in an amazing place. I hope I'll be here again. And again. Maybe for awhile. It would be a great place to bring the kids! They would grow up as fish!

Day 492 - At Sea

This was an exciting day of raw food creating.

Well, I tried at least! I made raw lasagna. Don't ask me why, but I didn't start until late. I think I finished my creation at 0200. Whoops. Half-way through, I managed to slice my finger on the mandolin slicer. The instructions warn you several times not to use the slicer without the guard. I thought I could do it without - VERY carefully - obviously! How hard could it be to slice a little zucchini? And whoops! There goes the thumb. Yeah, I sliced it pretty good. Blood gushed everywhere. I tried to call my husband, who was at work. No answer. I call again. No answer. I page. No callback. I page again. No callback. Good thing I'm not dying! Twenty minutes later he called to see what I had wanted & I told him it was fine, the bleeding was mostly under control. He returned to the cabin & went to bed. I carried on with my uncooking & after he'd gone to bed I proceeded to drop the paring knife on my barefoot. Thankfully it was handle first & not the pointy end! Adding this to the slice I'd given my finger when I was hooking up my scuba rig the other day in Bonaire & I was in pretty rough shape!

The good news of it all was that the lasagna was now done & in the dehydrator. Tomorrow would be a yummy day!

I also managed to squeeze in a 30 minute yoga workout! Yay! It's been a very long time since I've done any yoga - tomorrow could find me hobbling around!

Tomorrow we're off to see the stingrays in Grand Cayman... Time for a little shuteye! (& safety goggles!)

Day 491 - Aruba

We had a fabulous day in Aruba! This morning, our 3 stop snorkeling tour found us on board a beautiful old wooden sailboat or schooner. The Jolly Pirate was the name of the boat. We snorkeled first at the shipwreck site of the Atilla, a WWII German freighter that sunk just off the coast. There were plenty of fish & you could see quite a bit of the ship. The waves were a little rough, so snorkeling was mildly challenging.

Our second & third stops showed us coral, rocks, sand & of course, plenty of fish. I spotted 5 or 6 small squid, which I hadn’t seen before. Squid row was the phrase that came to mind. Sad, I know, but it made me laugh!

On the second stop, the crew blew the whistle for us to come back on board & we all did. Except for Dad2. The crew had removed the ladder & were ready to take off when they realized he wasn’t on board. We had to put the ladder back down & let him climb on board!

We met Cesar, the Watch Specialist from the Sea Princess. He had been on our tour in Grenada, so we enjoyed a visit with him. He is from Brasil & loves life! What’s not to love!?

After our third stop, the crew lowered a rope swing & the guests could swing off the ship & splash into the ocean. M&D2 went, as did Cesar. I did not. I took photos & video of their adventures. Everyone had a wonderful time!

The water is simply stunning in Aruba. The colours are VERY hard to beat! None of us wanted the trip to end. As we sailed back to meet the Banana Bus & return to the ship, we couldn’t help but marvel at the changing colours of the water. Wow.

Once we were back at the terminal, M&D2 decided to go shopping. I went back onboard & checked to see if Jaco was able to come ashore with me. He was still busy, so I went back off the ship & found my way to Wema, the hardware store. I picked up a blender, a food processor, a garlic press & a whisk. For $200. Back home, the blender would have cost $40, the food processor $20, the whisk $10 & the garlic press $10. Welcome to the isolation of the Caribbean. I guess I should have brought the Magic Bullet with me. Hindsight 20/20.

I walked back from Wema with my raw cooking appliances & left them on the ship. I went back out to see if I could find M&D2. No luck there, but I did pick up some sweets for Jaco, as well as an iced coffee for myself. Last year Jaco & I shared an iced coffee at the same place. This is my 2nd coffee in a year. Both of them have been in Aruba. Safe to say I’m not an addict!

I also found some butterflies in the same shop as I did last year. I usually collect them from Panama, but seeing as we’re not stopping in Panama & they are the same frame here, I picked up a frame today. They will go wonderfully with my collection!

This evening I made Thai noodles with my brand new blender. The sauce was quite garlicky, but yummy nonetheless. I took it with me to the pizzeria where M&D2 were enjoying dinner. Even the Waiters commented on the strong garlic smell! Jaco liked the noodles too!

Tomorrow is another sea day. I suspect I will do some more uncooking & see what I can whip up!
